KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Police Department has a new ally in the fight against drunk drivers. They’re hoping the faces of people lost in drunk driving accidents will make a difference at sobriety checkpoints.

Blue Springs, Mo. resident Annette Murray hopes the new plan will succeed. More than a year later, her family can’t believe her sister Diane and her niece Anna are gone. They were the victims of an alcohol-related crash last year on the July Fourth holiday weekend. Police say the man who caused the accident showed a blood-alcohol content that was twice the legal limit.

Photographs of Diane and Anna will be seen at police stops during the coming weeks in Kansas City, and Annette says she hopes drivers pay attention.

“Maybe seeing Anna and Diana’s faces going through a checkpoint — or someone else’s face — maybe a family member,” Annette told FOX 4 on Monday evening. ”Maybe seeing that will make someone think twice before they get behind the wheel.”

The Kansas City Police Department says they along with other police departments from the state of Missouri plan to step up patrols and DUI checkpoints throughout the Labor Day weekend.
