Support Kindergarten with Inoperable Cancer

OAK GROVE, MO -- Ricky McCormick, a 6 year old who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at just four months of age, has undergone numerous treatments including chemotherapy and isolation radiation. Despite all efforts of doctors and the constant support of his family, the tumor is no longer shrinking and the cancer has spread throughout Ricky’s body.

There will be a fundraiser on Monday, May 14th in the parking lot of New Life Assembly of God Church in Oak Grove, MO from 5 - 8 p.m. The Family Fun Night will feature many free activities for families, such as bounce houses, games and an entire fleet of preserved military vehicles to explore. Food and drinks will be available for purchase with proceeds going directly for Ricky’s care. The silent auction will feature a variety of items, including gift baskets and services donated by individuals and businesses.

First KC Lemon Run Fundraiser to Be Held Oct. 2

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will host the very first Lemon Run Kansas City 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Dash on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 8AM at Waterfall Park, 4501 South Bass Pro Drive in Independence, Missouri. The event will bring together athletes of all calibers, community members, childhood cancer heroes and all supporters of the battle against childhood cancer for a fun-filled morning to raise funds and awareness.

For those interested in participating, the registration cost is $25 per person, and $10 per child prior to Friday, September 30, 2011; day of registration is $30 and $15 respectively. There is also a $15 student rate.

Kansas City residents can sit behind the wheel of a modified Daytona 500 Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express Car as it makes a pit stop into your town on October 6th. The former race car, owned by Bentonville, AR- based, Street Legal Concepts, placed 15th at the 2008 Daytona 500 and will get a tire and lube express treatment at Kansas City Wal-Mart (8301 N Church Rd. Kansas City, MO 64158) before it takes off again.

“The Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express Car is an authentic retired racecar that was minimally modified to be classified as street legal,” explains Jeff Clapper, managing partner of Street Legal Concepts, a subsidiary of 101-Ventures. “It’s wonderful that Nascar fans and race car enthusiasts can see our modified version in action.”

It’s time for the 22nd Annual Oktoberfest September 23 & 24 in Lee's Summit.

The Chamber’s 22nd Annual Oktoberfest begins September 23, from 5-11 p.m. and continues September 24, from 9 a.m.–11 p.m. The festival is fun for the young and the young at heart. Kids Street, arts and crafts, authentic German meals, beer and brat tents, Biergarten, carnival, continuous live entertainment, Wiener Dog & Baby Contests, Rootbiergarten, German dancers, and a whole lot of fun highlights the weekend.

Oktoberfest would not be complete without the excitement and entertainment at the Biergarten. The Biergarten is the place to hang out for food, music, dancing and a lot of crazy fun! German meals are served in the Biergarten beginning Friday evening from 5–9 p.m. and Saturday evening from 4–9 p.m.

Tri-County slates 12-week program to help families

Tri-County slates 12-week program to help families

 A  free 12-week education and support program for families of individuals with mental illness will begin at Tri-County Mental Health Services Monday, Sept. 19.

The Family-to-Family meetings will be sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The meetings are designed for parents, siblings, other family members and significant others of persons with severe and persistent mental illness. Topics include everything from family responses to the trauma of mental illness, problem solving and advocacy.

The weekly meetings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. will be at Tri-County Mental Health Services, 3100 NE 83rd Street, Kansas City.

The 28th annual Blue Springs Barbeque Blaze-off runs Sept. 8 to Sept. 10 at the Hidden Valley Park Sports Complex, 6500 NW Valley View Rd. A free shuttle service will run on Friday fro 5 p.m. to midnight.Events Include: Buck-a-Bone — where contestants sell BBQ; KCBS sanctioned contest sausage and dessert categories; $10,000 in cash awards; music and entertainment.
